Important information about your
Chip & PIN cards |
| |
Your Chip and
PIN protected card |
Chip and PIN is part of an industry-wide
initiative to make the way we use cards more secure. |
- The Chip – this makes it extremely
difficult to copy or counterfeit the card.
- The PIN (Personal Identification Number)
– this helps to ensure the card user is the genuine
owner.
|
How to use your
card in the UK |
Instead of signing your name on a
receipt at the till, you will be asked to key in your four
digit PIN on a keypad. The PIN you use with your card will
be the same one you use at cash machines.
ALL card purchases at retailers with Chip and PIN machines
require authorisation using a PIN. You are no longer able
to sign at the checkout if you don't know your PIN. Instead,
you will be asked for an alternative method of payment. This
is industry-wide and affects all cards and retailers.
There are still a few retailers that haven’t yet installed
Chip and PIN equipment. If you shop at one of these you will
still be able to sign for your purchase. |
| |
How to use your
card overseas |
As technology across other countries
differs from the UK, you may need to sign your name on receipts
– however, all countries will eventually adopt the same
Chip and PIN system.
|
| |
Your PIN |
When you receive your first
One account debit or VISA card, or if your
new card replaces a lost or stolen card, you’ll
be sent a new PIN.
If your new debit or VISA card replaces a damaged card,
or is a renewal for an existing card, you should continue
to use your existing PIN with your new card: |
- For your VISA card
– you’ll receive a PIN reminder shortly
before your card arrives.
- For your debit card
– you won’t receive a reminder. If you’d
like one, call us when you receive your card.
|
|
It is important that you remember
your PIN, as you will be asked to enter it to authorise purchases
you make.
As additional security, if you enter your PIN incorrectly
three consecutive times, your PIN will be locked – and
you’ll need to unlock it to use your card – see
below. |
| |
Unlocking your
PIN |
If you enter your PIN incorrectly
on three consecutive occasions, your PIN will be ‘locked’
and you’ll need to unlock it before you can use it again.
You can do this by calling us on 08453 01 01 01
- we’ll then send you a reminder of your PIN. When this
arrives you’ll need to visit a Royal Bank of Scotland,
NatWest or Tesco Personal Finance branded cash machine to
unlock your PIN. Just enter your PIN, select ‘PIN
services’ then ‘unlock PIN’,
and follow the instructions on the screen.
|
| |
Remembering
your PIN |
| If at any time you need a reminder of
your PIN for your debit or VISA card, call us on 08453
01 01 01. |
| |
Changing your
PIN |
If you want to change your PIN you
can do this at any Royal Bank of Scotland, NatWest or Tesco
Personal Finance branded cash machine. |
| |
Using your PIN |
- When keying your PIN, ensure you do this
as discreetly as possible.
- No-one will ever ask for your PIN –
we won’t and nor will a retailer.
- Never tell anyone your PIN and never write
it down.
- When shopping over the internet, or by
phone, your PIN will not be requested – as a PIN is
only used for face-to-face purchases.

Your questions answered |
| |
Will I be liable
for purchases if my card is stolen and then used? |
| Under the UK Banking Code your maximum
liability, if your card is lost or stolen, is £50 –
unless you act without reasonable care. If your card is misused
before you receive it, you will not have to pay anything. |
| |
What happens
if I forget my PIN? |
| Don’t worry – just give us
a call on 08453 01 01 01 and we’ll send
you a reminder. We’ll also help by talking you through
other ways you can make purchases or withdraw cash until you
can use your PIN again. |
| |
Will anyone
else know my PIN? |
| No-one else will know your PIN and you
should never tell anyone your PIN. If you have a joint account
you will each have your own PIN. |
| |
What should
I do if I think someone knows my PIN? |
| You should change your PIN immediately
at a Royal Bank of Scotland, NatWest or Tesco Personal Finance
branded cash machine. If this is not possible you should call
us on 08453 01 01 01. We’ll cancel your
PIN protected card immediately and order you a new one, which
you’ll receive in a few days, along with a new PIN. |
| |
Do I use my
PIN for internet or telephone purchases? |
| No. When shopping over the internet,
or by phone, your PIN will not be requested – as a PIN
is only used for face-to-face purchases. |
| |
Will I use my
PIN in every shop? |
| No. Whilst the vast majority of retailers
already have the new Chip and PIN technology in place there
are a small number who will continue to accept a signature to
authorise payment for goods. However, this will only happen
until they have upgraded their equipment to Chip and PIN. |
| |
Will my PIN
appear on the receipt? |
| No. Your PIN will never be printed on
a receipt. |
| |
What happens
if I’m unable to use a PIN? |
| If you are restricted in your ability
to use a PIN then please contact us on 08453 01 01 01
to find out what we can do to help. |
| |
What happens
if I key in the wrong PIN? |
| Like a cash machine you have three attempts
to enter your PIN correctly. If you enter the PIN incorrectly
three times in a row, even if this is in separate shops on different
days, your PIN will be locked. You will then need to provide
an alternative form of payment for your transaction. In this
situation you should keep hold of your card and follow the instructions
given in this leaflet for unlocking your PIN. |
| |
Will I still
need to sign my card? |
| Yes. You must sign your card as you have
always done. |
